A prime example of Barrie’s ability to transform and develop a loss-making business into a profitable one came when he was Group Plc Chief Executive at Leicester City Football Club. Within a ten-year period, he took the struggling club from a turnover of £2m to £24m and also oversaw its stock market flotation.
His association with football and the sporting world continued with roles as chief executive of Portsmouth Football Club Limited on a one-year contract from 2000 to 2001 to provide stability and growth, interim chief executive of Bradford City Football Club where he restructured the company and oversaw the development and launch of a new £9m stand and as acting chief executive for a new consortium looking to take over Boston United Football Club.
Barrie also operated his own advertising, PR and marketing agency which served the sports, leisure, catering, education and retail sector. Working with a number of high profile clients including the likes of Dunelm, De Montfort University, Spearing Waite Solicitors and the University of Leicester, the company achieved the Investors in People award in 2004.
Such is his success in business, Barrie has a number of awards to his name. In 1998, he was presented with the nationally recognised DHL Boss of the Year award before a year later taking the Ernst & Young Turnaround Entrepreneur of the Year award. In 2005, he was a finalist for the Leicestershire Business Personality of the Year award.
Barrie is currently Managing Partner at BP Management & Marketing Services, where he utilises his skills as a Management Consultant and Business Advisor. In this role he provides professional business and management support to those within the boardroom and senior positions within a company.
